“Why isn’t my leopard gecko pooping?” It is a very common question that leopard gecko owners ask and there can be several reasons for this problem, as well as several solutions. Here are some possible answers, but don’t forget to see a vet if the condition lasts for more than a few days.

A leopard gecko that is not pooping is likely to have an impact – in other words, a blockage that prevents its food from passing through. An impaction can occur for any of the following reasons.

No. 1 – Lacks calcium. Leave a calcium dish in your aquarium at all times. If you feel the need, you will supplement your diet in this way.

No. 2 – Because you feel the need for calcium, you may have been eating your aquarium substrate. Some sands contain calcium and are marked as digestible by the manufacturers, but this is not the case at all. Paper towels are a cheap and safe alternative and the only other suitable coverings for the enclosure are reptile carpet tiles or slate. Do not use kitty litter, wood chips, bark, or any other substance.

No. 3: If your leopard gecko isn’t pooping, make sure whatever you’re feeding him isn’t too big. Avoid hard-shelled insects and any creature that is wider than your gecko’s head.

No. 4. – Lack of clean, fresh water can cause dehydration which in turn can cause constipation in reptiles. Make absolutely sure that plenty of water is supplied and that it is changed daily.

No. 5 – Insufficient heat can shock leopard geckos. Seek professional advice on the ideal temperature to keep your pet. This may involve purchasing a specialized aquarium heater.

To treat a constipated gecko, first follow the tips above about the environment in your aquarium. Second, remove the baby from solid food and feed it suitable baby food with supplements. Using an eyedropper like the one that can be used for human eye drops, treat your gecko with a few drops of olive oil or vegetable oil every day until the critter defecates and administers as much water as you can in the same way . Once a day, take a warm bath making sure the water temperature is not too high.

A non-defecating leopard gecko caused by impaction is a serious condition, and while you can try some of the suggested cures for a few days, if they have no effect, take your pet to a vet without further delay.
