A big draw to May for online businesses is the apparent ease with which anyone can make money. It is true that anyone can make money, but there is something that may not cross the mind of someone who is thinking of building an online business; Do you have the Internet IQ? Or just put; Do you know what you are doing. I mean here the basics, the fundamentals, the first steps you need to even start your potential business.

I’m going to keep this pretty simple and just list a couple of things you really should know if you’re going to build an online business.

-Basic HTML

Now, if you’re really new to the Internet, the mere sight of these few letters can bring horror to your mind. But it’s really not that important. You don’t need to be some kind of “super genius” or anything, it would just be a good idea to do some basic research on what html is, how it works, and how to do it yourself. Just the basics would suffice (unless you’re planning to build major websites), you don’t need to spend a lot of time, just get the basic understanding.

-Sending email

This is a very basic skill that you can learn in about thirty seconds if you really wanted to. It is so simple and yet it is really very important. If you build an online business, you probably want to keep in touch with a lot of people, and in fact, there are many situations where you can’t do anything unless you can send basic information via email. So this is a real need to learn.

-Write/copy and paste, etc.

Being literate does not mean that you are automatically computer literate. You will need basic knowledge like writing a Word document, copy and paste, saving files, etc. These are not difficult to make, in fact you can simply type them into a search engine and receive detailed instructions on all of these things.

-Basic computer care

It’s all about taking care of the computer itself. Just some basic knowledge of how to maintain your computer can save you a lot of hassle and expense. Considering that all of your business is likely to be run from your computer, it’s a good idea to learn how to protect it against viruses, spyware, Trojans, and the like, in addition to taking care of your actual computer hardware. Think of your computer the same way you would think of a bricks and mortar business, you would do everything possible to protect and care for your premises, so treat your computer the same way.

-Internet Literacy

I guess if you’re reading this on an article directory site, you at least have some internet savvy. This type of literacy is simply your ability to navigate the Internet. There’s not much to learn about this, just search the internet and see what’s out there. There are lots of viruses etc but as long as you know basic computer care skills then you should be fine.

Learn these basics (if you don’t know them already) and you’ll be laying a firm foundation for you to stay strong in your efforts to build your own online business.

Good luck!
