All India Radio’s Vividh Bharati service was planned around 1957 to compete with the then Radio Ceylon. Very soon, Vividh Bharati became a popular radio station, with around 15 hours of broadcasting. Today it broadcasts 24 hours a day.
You can listen to many programs throughout the day, in addition to these programs, many special programs that celebrate the lives of famous personalities in music, film and entertainment.
About 40 medium wave, FM and shortwave transmitters broadcast VBS to listeners across India. The powerful 500 KW Short Wave transmitter covers practically the entire country and is heard even on the East Coast of America
VBS started a digital broadcast (Digital Radio Mondial) on shortwave in January 2009. The audio quality of this shortwave signal which can be heard in many parts of India is as good if not better than a broadcast signal. broadcast on FM.

The main studio is at Borivili in Mumbai. Apart from Mumbai, many of the regional hubs of this radio station have their own programming.
All India Radio is the national government owned broadcaster of India, it has around 230 broadcast centers across the country. Its domestic service operates 149 Medium Wave transmitters, 54 Short Wave transmitters and 171 FM transmitters. All India Radio broadcasts in 24 languages and 146 dialects in its home service according to 2009 data.
