RC Sproul is well known for making difficult theological concepts understandable to the average layman. He has often said that a theologian does not understand the depths of a doctrine until he understands it well enough to explain it to a child. That is exactly what he has done in The Poison Cup.

Dr. Sproul begins his account by showing how man fell into the darkness of depravity after the perfect creation because of the fall. He then masterfully weaves the story of redemption as the prince of the realm comes to drink from The Poison Cup. RC Sproul paints an excellent but beautiful picture of the prince’s emotions as the battle to keep him from the cup rages within him. Finally, he exemplifies how he takes the faith of a child to lead humanity out of darkness and into the loving arms of the Savior.

You will want to read this story to your children or grandchildren often because of the way RC Sproul relates the truths of Scripture through this children’s story. Also, she’ll want to read this story multiple times to find out which of the many subplot doctrines she missed the last time she read the story.

This story is told in such a simple way that your children will ask you to read and reread this story often. The doctrines related throughout history are so glorious that you will gladly accept the task of doing it. Getting theology right is such an important endeavor that you don’t want to replace an in-depth study of the Scriptures with children’s literature, but as a recreational activity, reading these stories will reinforce the doctrines you gain from your Bible study.

It’s wonderful how RC Sproul has simplified the glorious truths of the Bible for laymen and children alike. The Poison Cup is the kind of literature you’ll be glad to have in your library as your children begin to relate these Biblical truths to their lives.
